Tires are one of the most important components of your vehicle; however, the vast majority of people take their tires for granted. They assume that if the tires are not flat, or they’re not slipping and sliding all over the road, then the tires are in good working order. That is far from the truth.
If you fail to adequately maintain your tires, then you are sitting atop a ticking time bomb. In fact, it is common to replace your tires every six years or so, or when you notice that the tread depth is low. Ideally, you should inspect your tires on a monthly basis. Tire maintenance does not just include replacements, but it includes rotations, balancing, and alignments.
Tire rotations should be performed between 5,000 and 7,000 miles. Tire balancing helps minimize uneven wear and extend the tire’s life. Your tires should be balanced each time it is removed from the wheel. A wheel alignment should occur when new tires are installed, or when you notice that your vehicle drifts on straight and even roads.
The condition of tires is affected by a multitude of factors: age, wear, road conditions, climate, driving habits, neglected basic tire maintenance, and improper usage.
